Sinopec Discovers Hongxing Large Shale Gas Field

On August 21, the Ministry of Natural Resources approved proven reserves of 165.025 billion cubic meters in Sinopec Jianghan Oilfield’s Hongxing shale gas field, marking the birth of another large shale gas field in China. It is also the first Permian shale gas field with reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic meters outside the Silurian system, adding a new front for safeguarding national energy security.

The gas field is located in the Hubei–Chongqing region. The main Permian pay zones lie at a depth of 3,300–5,500 meters, with complex structures and thin reservoirs, making exploration and development extremely challenging. Jianghan Oilfield innovatively developed an enrichment theory of “dual sweet spots in geology and engineering,” and established safe horizontal well completion technologies and high-conductivity fracturing processes. The daily output per single well has been increased from 89,000 cubic meters to 323,500 cubic meters, overcoming the constraints of complex geological conditions.

As a major player in shale gas development, Sinopec has already built the Fuling trillion-cubic-meter gas field and four 100-billion-cubic-meter-class gas fields including Weirong and Yongchuan. Next, it will deepen technological research, expand new areas in the Wujiaping Formation, develop large-scale Permian production bases, and continuously promote the high-quality development of China’s shale gas industry.
