The Beni Naji raw water pretreatment project in Mauritania, undertaken by PowerChina Port and Harbour Company, has passed acceptance and has been reported by Xinhua News Agency and the overseas edition of People’s Daily.
With 80% of Mauritania’s territory covered by desert, more than 1.5 million residents of the capital rely on the Senegal River for water. During the rainy season, the river’s high turbidity leads to shortages. The project has a daily treatment capacity of 255,000 cubic meters, was completed in seven months, and is equipped with six sets of high-density sedimentation tanks. The team overcame extreme heat and sandstorms, using corrosion-resistant equipment to ensure construction quality.
After commissioning, the stability of the capital’s water supply has increased to 90%, easing summer water shortages, creating 80 local jobs, reducing waterborne diseases, and benefiting 1.5 million people. It is a key achievement of China–Mauritania cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and provides a model for high-turbidity water treatment in Africa.
