As the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region is celebrated in 2025, PowerChina looks back on 69 years of assistance to Tibet: since launching a hydropower resource survey in 1956, it has devoted itself wholeheartedly to Tibet’s development, investing in 12 projects in the region with a total value of more than 2.9 billion yuan and helping Tibet move from poverty to prosperity.
In energy development, PowerChina has overcome the challenges of high altitude. In 1998, it completed the world’s highest-altitude pumped-storage power station at Yamzho Yumco Lake; in 2010, it built the Zangmu Hydropower Station, the first large-scale power station on the Yarlung Zangbo River. In recent years, it has also created new energy projects such as the Lhasa Mozhugongka pasture–solar complementary project, and advanced the Chamdo clean energy equipment manufacturing base, forming a green development industrial chain.
In the field of people’s livelihood, PowerChina donated 50 million yuan to rebuild houses in Dinggyê County and Lhazê County after disasters, and completed the Shiquanhe and Yarang hydropower stations, resolving power supply difficulties in Ngari and Medog. In terms of ecological protection, the Zangmu Power Station has built fish passages to protect the ecosystem, the Paime Highway has been developed as an ecological corridor, and the治理 of the Lhasa River has restored its aquatic ecology, using green practices to safeguard the purity of the plateau. Looking ahead, PowerChina will continue to inject strength into the long-term stability and high-quality development of Tibet.
